Peter White, PhD.
Director, Biomedical Genomics Core
Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Peter received his PhD. in Molecular Endocrinology from the University of Cambridge, England in 1998. His scientific career has focused on understanding the mechanisms of gene regulation. Prior to being appointed as Director of the Biomedical Genomics Core in June 2008, he spent five years at the University of Pennsylvania running the Functional Genomics Core. He has extensive experience with both the Agilent and Affymetrix array platforms, and the Illumina Genome Analyzer for Next Generation Sequencing. To date he has helped perform and analyze over 500 microarray experiments. Please see his Faculty Home Page for research interests, detailed CV/Biosketch and complete publication record. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, is a keen distance runner and loves to relax on the beach. This last pastime is proving to be difficult in Columbus!
David Newsom
Technical Director
David began working with Affymetrix Microarrays in 1999 in one of the first microarray facilities in the state of Ohio. He experienced the infancy of array technology all while earning a B.S. in Molecular Genetics from The Ohio State University. Since then he has personally processed over 4000 Affymetrix Genechips including expression, SNP, Exon and Tiling arrays. David manages the logistics of sample processing and overall day-to-day laboratory activities of the Biomedical Genomics Core. In his spare time David enjoys weightlifting with friends and working on home improvement projects designated by his wife. Anytime you want to talk Buckeye football, David is available!
Huachun (Hua) Zhong
Senior Research Associate
Hua earned her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Fudan University in China. After graduating with a Master's degree in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University in 1997, she joined the DNA sequencing core at the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She has sequenced tens of thousands of samples for our research community since then. With the introduction of next generation sequencing to the Biomedical Genomics Core, Hua happily joined their team. She spends a lot of time playing with her two daughters and loves gardening and reading in her spare time.
Patrick Hu, PhD.
Senior Bioinformatics Scientist
Patrick received his BS and MS in Biomedical Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University and Tsinghua University, and PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Washington. He has always been interested in the application of computational methods to solve complex biomedical and clinical problems. Prior to joining the Biomedical Genomics Core his research mainly focused on medical imaging and image processing; he developed computer algorithms that combine mathematical, statistical, and machine learning approaches to filter, register, segment, and extract features from 3D and 4D images. His current work focuses on the analysis and interpretation of next generation data sets, including human genome sequencing and variant analysis, bacterial genome sequencing, and the automation of the numerous workflows, where he uses his experience in designing and implementing scalable software systems to work with large data sets. When he is not programming, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, and playing the GO game.
Whitney Sowby
Research Associate
Whitney graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 2006 and went on to earn Master’s degree in Physiology and Developmental Biology in August of 2008 from Brigham Young University, Provo, UT. Prior to joining our group she worked as a laboratory specialist in the Microarray Core Facility of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT. There she was responsible for preparing next generation sequencing libraries for ChIP-Seq, mRNA-seq, Genomic/Array Capture and Small RNA-seq applications. With her experience and training, and meticulous attention to details, she is a great fit in the BGC. Whitney also believes that the Mountain West can play with the Big Ten but is sure to not mention this around David!
Meng Wang
Research Aide
Meng is currently enrolled in the PhD program at The Ohio State University and has finished the first year of graduate study. She conducts analysis in inference (point estimation, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals, as well as large sample theory), regression, design of experiments and multiviariate analysis.
Meredith Zhang
Research Aide
Meredith began working in the Biomedical Genomics Core in the summer of 2009. She has been working on the study of new-born piglets’ pancreas. The study focuses on examining beta cells in the pancreatic tissue quantitatively, a process which requires extensive image analysis. She is currently a junior in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Ohio State University. In her spare time, she likes to read detective stories, watch suspense movies and loves to travel.
Pat Black
Secretary II
Pat is a lifelong resident of Central Ohio. She began working in the Biomedical Genomics Core in October 2010. Prior to that she was an administrative assistant in the hospital. She enjoys watching her kids compete in Taekwando, playing with her dog and reading. She is sadly disappointed that Ohio doesn't have any winning pro-football teams, so is a reluctant Buckeye football fan.
